Become a Community Health Worker
Community Health Workers, also known as CHWs (and a variety of other titles), help individuals navigate Alaska’s healthcare system and connect individuals to services and support available locally. CHWs are a trusted resource in the community they live and serve, providing a range of services including outreach, education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy.
What Does Community Health Work Look Like?
Community health work involves helping people in the community stay healthy and connected to resources. CHWs educate individuals about healthcare services, public benefits like food stamps or Medicaid, and offer information on housing support, health clinics, and more. CHWs also participate in local events, collaborate with community organizations, and act as a bridge between the community and healthcare systems to ensure everyone gets the care they need.
What’s the Benefit of Being a CHW?
Becoming a CHW offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by connecting individuals to healthcare services and promoting health education. As demand for CHWs grows, you’ll develop valuable skills in communication, advocacy, and healthcare coordination. CHWs address social determinants of health, helping patients receive holistic care while reducing time and costs associated with primary care. Additionally, they organize community events and lead educational initiatives.
