Become a Community Health Worker with APCA’s CHW Apprenticeship Program
Are you passionate about helping others and making a difference in your community? The Alaska Primary Care Association offers a Community Health Worker Apprenticeship Program – a structured, hands-on pathway to a rewarding healthcare career.
What Does a CHW Do?
CHWs serve as a vital link between healthcare services and the community, ensuring individuals receive the care and resources they need. They provide education, connect people with housing support and health clinics, and advocate for healthier communities. CHWs also participate in local events, collaborate with organizations, and help navigate the healthcare system for those who need support.

How to Get Started
- Be Employed – Ensure employment in a relevant role within the healthcare or community services field
- Enroll in the CHW Apprenticeship Program – Apply for the CHW Apprenticeship Program through APCA. This program is up to 18 months and combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction
- Complete Training – Participate in 2,000 hours of hands-on training to develop essential skills in health education, outreach, and care coordination
- Earn While You Learn – Receive a competitive wage throughout the training period
- Obtain Certification – Upon program completion, receive a nationally recognized CHW Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by the U.S. Department of Labor
