What is a Community Health Center?
Community Health Centers (CHCs) are an essential part of Alaska’s healthcare system, providing affordable, high-quality care to individuals and families statewide.
Alaska is home to 29 Community Health Centers — two of which are Look-Alikes — operating more than 200 clinic sites in urban and remote communities. About half of Alaska’s CHCs are Tribally Operated, reflecting the partnership between Tribal and non-tribal organizations that helps expand access to care. Together, CHCs employ nearly 2,700 healthcare professionals and serve one in six Alaskans each year, ensuring that care is available to everyone regardless of income, insurance status, or ability to pay.

What Services DoCommunity Health Centers Offer?
Alaska’s Community Health Centers provide a wide range of services, though specific care varies by location. Services may include:
- Medical
- Dental
- Behavioral Health
- Pharmacy
- Wellness
- Health Education
These services are designed with accessibility and affordability in mind. Whether someone has private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or no coverage at all, CHCs work to make care affordable for everyone.
COMMUNITY-DRIVEN CARE
Community Health Centers stay closely connected to the people they serve. Local patients and residents help guide CHCs by serving on leadership boards, ensuring that the care and services offered meet the needs of each community. CHCs also partner with schools, food banks, and local organizations to support the overall health and well-being of their communities.
SUPPORTING ALASKA’S COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS
The Alaska Primary Care Association (APCA) partners with CHCs to support Alaska’s healthcare workforce, improve operations, and strengthen community impact.
Through pre-apprenticeships, registered apprenticeships, and online certifications, APCA creates pathways for Alaskans to enter and advance in the health field.
APCA also provides technical assistance and strategic guidance to help CHCs deliver strong, community-centered care across the state.
