What is a Community Health Worker? Transforming Rural Healthcare in Alaska

In rural Alaska, connecting individuals to healthcare services can be challenging. Community Health Workers (CHWs) are a solution – trusted members of their communities who bridge the gap between individuals and healthcare providers.

CHWs address the specific needs of communities by helping individuals navigate healthcare systems, access services, and understand their health options. They provide culturally relevant support, ensuring patients feel heard and respected. From scheduling appointments to managing chronic conditions, CHWs empower individuals to take charge of their health while strengthening their communities.

Why do CHWs Matter?

In the rural community of Talkeetna, Alaska, where access to healthcare is limited, Community Health Workers (CHWs) are transforming lives. Located two hours from Anchorage and home to just over 1,000 people, Talkeetna is an example of how CHWs are bridging critical gaps in rural healthcare.

Sunshine Community Health Center’s Chief Executive Officer, Joshua Gilmore, highlights the value CHWs bring to organizations and patients alike.

“Community Health Workers are filling a gap that otherwise rural healthcare organizations have no coverage for,” he explained. “I really feel like CHWs are going to continue to fill that gap between the non-medical and the medical. They help us better identify needs that aren’t always visible on the surface and create lasting relationships with patients to truly meet their whole-person wellness needs.”

For CHW Jasmine Riversong, the work is both meaningful and rewarding.

“As a Community Health Worker, you are a connecting factor between so many places, resources, and people,” she said.

This connection resonates with patients, too.

“It showed me that the word ‘community’ was in this health center,” said patient Sheila B. Karopchinsky, reflecting on her experience working with Riversong.

CHWs are more than just healthcare workers – they are educators, connectors, and champions of wellness in Alaska’s rural communities.
