The Impact of CHW Training: How an Alaskan Woman is Making a Difference in Her Community
Preciosa Hutchings is a Behavioral Health Associate at a substance abuse treatment center in the Mat-Su Valley. Her journey in healthcare began with APCA’s Community Health Worker Apprenticeship Program, an experience that has not only shaped her career but also deepened her passion for helping others.
“The program gave me the knowledge and confidence to support my community in ways I never imagined,” she said. “I learned how to truly connect with people, offer meaningful support, and address health concerns in a way that makes a real difference. It also opened doors for me professionally and helped me grow in my career.”
Through the program, she developed essential skills in health education and patient support – tools she now uses every day. Community Health Workers play a vital role in bridging the gap between healthcare services and the people who need them most. While they go by many different titles, their mission remains the same: helping individuals access trusted, community-based care that improves lives.
In her current role, Preciosa’s favorite part of the job is the personal connections she makes each day. She listens to people’s stories, helps them navigate challenges, and provides the support they need to improve their health and well-being.
“The diversity of the communities here keeps the work interesting, and I love that I’m always learning something new,” she said. “Even small efforts can have a big impact on someone’s life, and that’s what makes this work so rewarding.”
Preciosa continues to support Alaskans struggling with substance use challenges, using the skills she gained through the CHW Apprenticeship Program.
“I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned as a CHW because I use those skills every day. It’s fulfilling to see the impact of my work, and I’m excited to keep learning and making a difference.”
