Description
SUMMARY
This position is responsible for pharmaceutical services related to the day to day operation of pharmacy services provided at Copper River Native Association (CRNA) and the rural clinics. This pharmacist must provide accurate, safe, efficient and cost-effective pharmaceutical care either directly or indirectly through the supervised efforts of support staff, to the patients and retail consumers. The pharmacist assesses medication appropriateness and effectiveness for patients and collaborates with healthcare providers regarding interventions necessary to optimize patient care. The candidate must possess knowledge regarding standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of clinical pharmacy, and can effectively communicate their thoughts and recommendations.
JOB DUTIES
- Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician/provider orders; detecting therapeutic incompatibilities.
- Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
- Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies; advising interventions.
- Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, charges, and inspections.
- Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals; counseling patients on drug therapies.
- Develops staff's pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals.
- Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions.
- Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Aides in the configuration of the pharmacy including development and review of the necessary policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations as related to pharmaceutical medicine.
- Strong understanding and sensitivity to Alaska Native culture and lifestyle, with demonstrated experience working effectively with Alaska Native population.
- Strong written, analytical, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- Effective oral and written communications skills with sensitivity to lifestyles of targeted participants.
- Strong physical assessment, supervisory, and teaching skills.
- Skills in operating personal computer using a variety of computer software.
- Ability to keep accurate records and produce timely and accurate written reports.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as required for HIPAA, and other applicable regulations.
- Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, including outside contacts.
- Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of a Pharmacy program.
- Licensed in Alaska as a Pharmacist.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Pharmacist.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Five (5) years of experience as a Pharmacist.
- Two (2) years of experience in a rural health care setting.

This position corresponds to medium duty work, involving physical exertion of 20-50 lbs. frequently; such exertion involves the lifting and/or moving of young children in the program, and/or goods and materials within the facility. There is frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, and squatting/crouching in an indoor classroom as well as an outdoor environment. The majority of work is performed in a classroom setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. CRNA is a smoke free and tobacco free campus. May require local travel between compact services of CRNA which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions. Works in an environment where protection of client confidentiality is essential. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided when and where needed.
SPECIFICATIONS
Supervision Received:
Work will be monitored through meetings, reports, and regular communication with the immediate supervisor. General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements, conditions of grant award(s), and the general policies and procedures of CRNA. Administratively reports to the PC Practice Manager, and clinically reports to the Medical Director.
Supervision Exercised:
Position will exercise supervision of assigned staff and complete required documentation, including performance evaluations, training, and general oversight through direct reports.
Contacts:
Contacts include and not limited to volunteers, organizational staff, clients, and outside agencies.

- CRNA is a no tolerance workplace. All employees must pass an initial and random drug and alcohol screening to be eligible for and maintain employment.
- CRNA has several positions that require a criminal background check for the safety of our clients. All employment offers in the covered classification are conditional until CRNA has received a Federal criminal background check verifying eligibility to work in these programs.
- First Aid/CPR adult and pediatric certification must be obtained within 90 days.
- As applicable by position and company policy, must meet standards for fitness for duty, immunizations, credentialing and privileging.
